Sky cancels The Smoke!

Sky 1 has cancelled Kudos-produced firefighter drama The Smoke after a single series.

The broadcaster has decided against ordering a second series of the 8 x 60-minute drama, which aired between February and April.

“We’re very proud of The Smoke, which played a key part in Sky 1’s plans to develop big scale dramas; something we will continue to do with our audience in mind,” Sky noted.

In keeping with the first series, secrecy and intrigue surrounds the story of the award winning drama written by creator and acclaimed screenwriter Chris Chibnall.

According to The Sunday Telegraph, ITV are close to commissioning two new 13-episode drama series.

ITV Studios is currently developing adaptations of The Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde and Beowulf.

Beowulf will be produced by Tim Haines, who oversaw Primeval – ITV’s last big family adventure series.

Meanwhile, Fast Show star and writer Charlie Higson will create a Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde.

BBC One has commissioned a third series of crime drama Shetland from ITV Studios!

Douglas Henshall will once again star as DI Jimmy Perez in the series, which is adapted from Ann Cleeves’s Shetland crime novels.

ITV’s production arm has been commissioned to make another 6 x 60-minute run of the drama, which will go into production later this year.

BBC Two’s police corruption thriller Line Of Duty has been re-commissioned for two more series!

Series three and four of Jed Mercurio’s detective drama will feature two new stories told over two series of 6 x 1 hour episodes.

The show will be produced by World Productions.

Mercurio said: “I can promise two explosive new cases for AC-12, new guest stars as police officers investigated for corruption, further twists and turns from the loose ends of series two, and maybe even some surprise reappearance.”

The 8 x 60-minute drama which is to star Tom Hardy will be directed by Ridley Scott!

Set in 1813, the story follows James Keziah Delaney (Hardy), a rogue adventurer who returns from Africa with 14 ill-gotten diamonds to seek vengeance after the death of his father.

Refusing to sell the family business to the East India Company, he sets out to build his own trade and shipping empire and finds himself playing a dangerous game with two warring nations, Britain and America.

Harry Potter actress Katie Leung is to star in upcoming BBC Two drama One Child – a two-part 90-minute drama written by Guy HIbbert and directed by Exile’s John Alexander.

One Child crosses the world as a young Chinese-born woman adopted by Anglo-American parents struggles with who she really is and where her loyalties lies.

Writer Guy Hibbert said:

“I wanted to visit a contemporary Chinese city to discover what I felt was the most important story to tell from the point of view of the ordinary Chinese citizen.

BBC One has today announced the cast for its new drama commission Our Zoo – an inspiring real story of the eccentric Mottershead family who established Chester Zoo in the 1930s.

Lee Ingleby (Inspector George Gently) will play George Mottershead, an ex-serviceman with a dream to build the first British zoo without bars, with Liz White (Life On Mars) playing his loyal wife Lizzie Mottershead, mother to Mew and June.

BAFTA-nominated actress Anne Reid (Last Tango In Halifax) takes the role of Lucy Mottershead, whose world is turned upside down when her husband, Albert (Peter Wight, The Paradise), sells their shop to help fund George’s plans for the zoo and both are forced to live with their son and family in the country.

Corrie, which was nominated alongside Casualty and Emmerdale, followed its previous ‘Best Soap’ win at this year’s NTAs with the ‘Soap and Continuing Drama’ accolade.
